Internships through ACDIS

Internships can offer a valuable means for students to get practical experience in the field, giving them ample exposure to particular working environments as a complement to their academic studies. Students can also gain confidence and problem-solving skills that will help them as they pursue a chosen career path. An internship experience may also better enable a student to make sound judgments about his or her future career options.

Currently, ACDIS provides two distinct but related services to University of Illinois students with regards to internships.

  1. ACDIS conducts an annual competition for undergraduate student scholarships. Internships, particularly those that involve an experience abroad and are relevant to international security, are among the activities eligible for such funding.

  2. ACDIS has developed a web database of internship opportunities at organizations with specific focus on various topics and geographical regions that are also of concern to our program. These listings include internship programs that may be eligible for possible scholarship support through ACDIS. See “About the Internship Database” below for more information about the content of these resource pages. There are two ways to access this database. You may browse through the listings, or you can search for an internship catered to your needs.

Students may also wish to consult the University Career Center’s web site on internships, which has advice on searching for internships, applying for internships, preparing for an internship, and reviewing the internship experience.

About the Internship Database

The database linked from this page (search or browse) is intended as a guide to help students identify various internship opportunities relevant to topics and regions—such as conflict resolution, environment and energy, disarmament, South Asia, and so on—of interest to the ACDIS program. The database includes over two hundred organizations with internship programs both in the United States and abroad, as well as additional links with general information and advice about internships. Where possible, we have linked directly to web pages devoted to internship and career opportunities on a given organization’s web site. We have also provided information, when available, about compensation available through each internship (whether it is paid or unpaid, and whether or not a stipend is available).

Note: inclusion in this database does not represent endorsement by ACDIS of any particular organization or its internship program; the content here is provided simply as an informational resource. Suggestions on links to be added or updated can be sent to the ACDIS webmaster.
