GUIDE TO THE SERVICES
AND COLLECTIONS OF THE ACDIS LIBRARY

The ACDIS Library collection consists of materials which focus on:

1. The economic, political, technological and military aspects of arms control and disarmament.
2. The legal, philosophical and cultural issues associated with international peace and security.
3. Regional security and arms control in South Asia and Europe.
4. Historical dimensions of war and peace studies.

The ACDIS Library is located in Room 369 Armory Building, on the third-floor east corridor of the Armory.

    Library Hours for fall semester 2007

    Please call the main ACDIS office at (217)333-7086 or email the ACDIS librarian if you need assistance when the library is closed.

    The ACDIS Library is staffed by the Librarian and occasionally by student volunteers from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Please be aware that only the Librarian is able to field in-depth reference requests. Appointments with the Librarian can be scheduled during Library hours or for other more convienent times.

    Circulation Policies

    Circulating books, Vertical File materials, Course Packets, Theses, and UN & GAO Documents:

    4 weeks for undergraduate students / 16 weeks for faculty, graduate students and visiting scholars

    Back issues of journals and newspapers:

    4 weeks for faculty, grad students and visiting scholars

    Back issues of journals are loaned to undergraduate students only with the permission of the Librarian.

    Current issues (in the conference room) do not circulate.

    All issues of newspapers and journals may be borrowed for up to two hours to be photocopied in Room 355 Armory

     

    Non-print media

    2 weeks for all patrons

    Videos that are on reserve for a course can only be borrowed by students in the course for up to 3 days

     

    Reference materials:

    ACDIS affiliated users may borrow reference materials for up to 3 days with the permission of the Librarian. Please contact the ACDIS librarian to obtain reference collection borrowing privileges.

    Other UIUC faculty, staff, students and community members may borrow reference materials for up to two hours for photocopying in Room 355. Materials may not be borrowed overnight.

    Users who do not return reference material within 3 days, do not renew materials, or do not return materials upon the request of the librarian will lose reference collection borrowing privileges.

     

    Renewing materials:

    Circulating materials can be renewed in person, by phone, or by e-mail provided they have not been requested by another patron. To renew ACDIS items by e-mail, send a message to the ACDIS librarian, listing the books to be renewed. To renew ACDIS items by phone, call the ACDIS Librarian at 333-9173 during the library hours or leave a voicemail message.

    To renew books from University Library, use the online catalog at http://www.library.uiuc.edu/catalog or call the Library Telephone Center at 333-8400. Renewal notices are sent by email.

     

    Returning Materials:

    Please return library materialsto the ACDIS Library during open hours or to the ACDIS Office, room 359 Armory Building at any other time. Please use the mail slot in the door if the office is closed.

    DO NOT RETURN ACDIS MATERIALS TO ANY UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS LIBRARY, you may be charged for lost materials.

     

    Overdue Fine Rates:

    Please return or renew your library materials by the due date. Items not renewed or returned are subject to lost book billings:

    • $125.00 minimum for circulating books
    • $300.00 for reference materials and journals

    Patrons who lose books, are consistently late in returning books, or who do not respond to recall requests may lose ACDIS Library borrowing privileges.

    Patrons should pay in the ACDIS Main Office of Room 359, Armory Building.

     

    Photocopies:

    Certain materials, such as reference books and periodicals, may circulate for two hours for photocopying. The photocopy machine is located in Room 355 Armory and each copy costs 10¢. Ask the library staff or the ACDIS Secretary in Room 359 for access to the copy room. Please use your photocopy code or pay at the secretary's desk.

    Periodicals

    Current issues of journals, newsletters, and newspapers are displayed in the Conference Room (please enter through Room 359). Back issues of journals are shelved alphabetically by title in the ACDIS Library. Newsletters are filed alphabetically in the newsletter file drawer. Please check the periodicals page for information on library holdings. Contact the Librarian for the most up to date information or with any questions about holdings.

     

    Vertical File

    The Vertical File materials consist of ACDIS publications, occasional papers, reports, pamphlets, articles, unpublished documents and other materials received through gift, exchange or purchase. ACDIS Occasional Papers are filed in alphabetical order by author in their own drawers. All other materials, "gray literature," is stored in file drawers in the order in which it was catalogued.

     

    Reference Collection

    All reference books shelved in the Reference Section, located to the right of the Librarian's desk.

     

    Collection Recommendations

    Suggestions for purchase of new materials and for service improvements are always welcomed.

    Donations

    If you have materials that you would like to donate, we will be glad to consider adding them to the collection. Please contact the librarian to arrange to drop off the materials for consideration.

    ACDIS Library Catalogs

    ACDIS Library Catalog

    The ACDIS Library Catalog is now online. Please see the Catalog Page for more information. Address any questions about searching the catalog to the Librarian or ACDIS staff.

     

    University of Illinois Online Catalog

    ACDIS holdings are not included in the University Library Online Catalog because the library is not part of the University Library system. However, the Online Catalogt may be accessed by all ACDIS terminals. The Online Catalog accesses materials available from all the UIUC Libraries as well as 45 other libraries across the state of Illinois. Searching can be done by author, title, subject, keyword or call number. Full bibliographic information and circulation data are shown.

    Most items may be requested or paged from campus libraries and Illinet libraries through the Online Catalog. Grad students and faculty may request books to be delivered to their office, selecting Campus Mail as the Pickup Location in the request from. On campus items will arrive within 3-5 days, off-campus mail requests may take up to 10 days. If you need assistance on searching the Online Catalog, please contact the ACDIS Librarian.

    Interlibrary Loan

    Materials not located by using the state-wide Illinet Online Catalog may be borrowed from other libraries. Please stop by the Interlibrary Loan Office in Rm. 104 of the Main Library to fill out the form or visit the IRRC website at www.library.uiuc.edu/irrc to fill out the secure web form.

    Reference Services

    The staff of the ACDIS Library strives to provide the best possible service to its users. Reference services range from assistance in locating materials and information needed for teaching and research, to instruction in using the catalog or other databases. No specific hours are set aside for reference service, but questions can be asked any time the Library is open. In-depth research or reference questions can only be answered by the Librarian. If the Librarian is not in the Library, a message can be left in the ACDIS office (Room 359 Armory) or with any of the students working in the Library. Reference and research questions can also be submitted by phone, (217) 333 9173 or email to the ACDIS librarian at any time.

    Library Tours

    Library tours to the Arms Control Collection in the Education and Social Science Library, the South Asia Collection in Asian Library, the Government Documents Library, Main Library Stacks and other libraries as needed are conducted at the beginning of each semester for incoming scholars or by appointment. Please contact the Librarian for further information.
